ASK THE EXPERTS: Is it possible to remove “pearly penile papsules”?

Your Question:

Dear Experts,

Just thought I’d throw my question at you. From what basic information I know about pearly white penile papules they are infections or abnormalities in the skin. If it is indeed an infection is there a possible way to remove them since in my research I have yet to find any information. Thank you.

The Answer:

Dear ppp03,

“Pearly penile papules” on the penis are normal growths that appear around the base of hair follicles. There is no medical need for them to be removed, and self-removal is not advised. If people are very concerned about them for cosmetic reasons, a dermatologist may remove them with laser surgery. Another fairly common condition that may resemble pearly penile papules is infection of the sebaceous glands, or simply put, pimple-like growths, which can be treated with antibiotics. Neither condition can be transmitted to partners.

Keep in mind that we cannot make a diagnosis over the internet, and that some bumps are sexually transmitted infections that can be passed to partners. That is why it is always best to be evaluated by a clinician to determine a diagnosis and treatment, if any is necessary. To find Planned Parenthood health center near you, call 1-800-230-PLAN.

Hope this information helps!
